Soda Fork Habitat Improvement

Primary beneficiary: Community

Funded by: ???

Project description

The Soda Fork Habitat Improvement Project occurred in the summer of 2013 and involved pulling over 34 mature Douglas fir trees into Soda Fork to improve habitat for winter steelhead, spring Chinook, and resident cutthroat trout.

Before the project in this reach, Soda Fork offered poor spawning conditions due to the large amount of bedrock on the stream bottom.  The addition of large trees should slow winter stream flows and allow for sediment to drop and form spawning beds around the wood structures.

This project was identified in the Cool-Soda collaboration as a high priority.  In June, 2014 winter steelhead redds (or nests) were observed within the project reach for the first time in recent memory.
