Last year, many of us noticed changes on the river. The deep drawdown at Green Peter Reservoir resulted in visible impacts that were felt deeply in the communities downstream. By now, most folks know that the US Army Corps is responding to a court order to draw down Green Peter. This is intended to provide downstream passage for young, federally-protected Chinook and steelhead. The planned operations in 2024 are different than they were in 2023 and we know that community members have questions about those changes, and what they might mean for fish, for drinking water, and for the wellbeing of the larger watershed. Please join us on Thursday, October 10, for a community gathering at the Sweet Home High School Auditorium to learn more, ask questions, and be in conversation with staff from the Army Corps. Doors open at 6:00, and there will be a short talk at 6:30, followed by time for Q&A.
We recognize that the impacts of last year’s drawdown were significant and there is deep concern in the community. This community meeting is not part of a public process, but rather a time for folks who have questions and want to better understand what's happening in the South Santiam basin to gather. We hope that when you and your neighbors leave next week’s meeting, you will not only have more information than when you came in, but that you will also know who to contact with additional questions and concerns.
