In 2017, the South Santiam Watershed Council led the Thomas Creek Side Channel Project, located about 8.5 miles east of Scio along Highway 226. The project improved fish habitat by adding large wood structures to the stream, creating a more diverse and complex habitat for both adult and juvenile fish.

The project included nine large wood structures made from 36 logs with rootwads and treetops and 27 additional logs, along with ballast material to help anchor the structures. The strategically placed wood provides stable, long-lasting habitat while helping collect and retain sediment, creating additional areas for fish to rest, feed, and grow.

Together, these improvements help create a healthier and more resilient stream system while providing important habitat for fish throughout the Thomas Creek watershed.
